If you’ve taken our IC workshop before, you learned what kinds of Instant Challenges to expect.  Now get ready to learn how to teach your team the skills they need to solve any DI challenge they encounter!  This hands-on class includes strategies and exercises as well as new challenges for practice and insight to new IC competition trends.  If you think you’ve done this one before, think again!

2. Roadmap is a complementary resource. It does not replace the DI Program Materials, nor will it tell your team exactly how to solve its Team Challenge. You will need to refer to the DI Program Materials and use the Roadmap according to your team’s needs.
3. Your team can complete the Roadmap sessions however you choose. For example, your team may want to complete two sessions per week. It’s up to your team. Be aware that your team will likely need to schedule additional time to complete its Team Challenge solution.
4. Roadmap’s path is not the only path your team can take to a Tournament. It simply suggests a course. Your team may need to take detours, or spend more time on certain sections. Every team is different!

The Scene: Three of your friends are having birthdays. You are giving them the same gift but need to wrap them three different ways so you can tell them apart. Each of your friends has different personalities so your challenge is to design the wrapping to match the person receiving the gift.

Time: Your team will have 4 minutes to design and wrap the three gifts and 2 minutes to present the wrapped gifts and describe the personality of the person receiving the gift.

Materials: Scissors and colored markers (not to be used in the presentation)  3 milk cartons to be wrapped as the gifts, 1 brown paper grocery bag, 5 large rubber bands, 10 mailing labels, 1 yard of string, 3 sheets of colored 8×10 paper, 5 pieces of lasagna noodles, 1/2 yard fabric, 6 – 12 inch sheets of foil, 4 toilet paper tubes, 10 chenille stems (pipe cleaners) and 3 envelopes.

Scoring: (100 possible)

• up to 10 points each for the creativity of the three wrapped gift (30 points possible)
• up to 10 points each for the how well each gift match the personality of the person receiving the gift. (30 points possible)
• 0 to 20 point for the effectiveness of your presentation to the appraisers.
• 0 to 20 points for positive teamwork.

Team Debrief

The Gifts:

• How creatively wrapped were your gifts?
• What else could you have added? Subtracted? Done differently?
• What were the personalities of the people you were giving the gifts to?
• Did your gifts match these personalities?
• What could you have done differently?

Time:

• Did you complete the first part of the challenge within the 4 minutes? If no – why not? What could you do different?
• Did you complete the second part of the challenge within the 2 minutes? If no – why not? What could you do different?
• Did anyone ask now much time was left to work?

Teamwork:

• Did your team work well together?
• Was every team members ideas listened to?
• Did every team member participate in the challenge?

The Points:

• Did your team read over the scoring section of the challenge?
• Where were the most point available?
• Where could you have picked up more points?

1. Use sponges to make a flag that will help you mow the lawn, but you ran out of gas while at the grocery store with a professional wrestler.
2. Use pasta to make an office product that will dance, but when you’re in Chinatown with your personal chef there is a flood.
3. Use rubber bands to make a musical Instrument that will feed animals, but while you’re at a ski resort the electricity goes out and you have a problem with a tuba player.
4. Use a hula hoop to create a camera for a vampire who is visiting a chicken farm but something keeps making him laugh uncontrollably.

Time: You will have 7 minutes to use your imagination to create a maze and practice using it, and up to 2 minutes to run a marble through the maze.

Set-up: On a table are materials your team can use to create a maze.

Procedure:

Part One, 7 minutes. Using the box and materials that are provided, create a maze that uses as much time as possible to roll a marble through it. Plan to have the box stand up on one of its sides. Put a hole for the marble in the upper left corner. You may practice with the marble and make changes as long as you do not destroy the box.

Part Two, 2 minutes. Stand the box up on one of its sides. Insert the marble in the upper left corner to begin its journey. The marble needs to roll to the lower right corner as slowly as possible. Once the marble has begun its run, no part of a team member’s body may touch either the box or the marble.

Materials:

• flat box without lid
• 25 craft sticks
• 10 pipe cleaners
• roll of masking tape
• scissors (may not be part of the solution)
• marble (may not be altered)

Scoring: You will receive
A. 10 points for rolling the marble successfully to the end of the maze
B. 5 points for every 10 seconds (rounded to the nearest 5 sec.) that the marble continues to roll (60 points max.)
C. Up to 15 points for the creativity of your maze
D. Up to 15 points for how well your team works together
